To make the most of your time with an adviser:
- Bring your questions: Prepare a list ahead of time and include them in the notes section when scheduling.
- Be ready to take notes: Advisers may recommend actions or forms to complete—having a way to take notes will help you stay organized.
- For virtual appointments: Use a laptop or device with internet access to fully engage with Microsoft Teams features. Advisers may share links or files via chat, so make sure you can save them.
- Schedule early: Book your appointment before major academic deadlines (e.g., registration windows) to allow time for follow-up with other offices like Financial Aid, Student Accounts, or your Faculty Adviser.
- Request accommodation with DRS, if needed. Let your adviser know in advance if you need any accommodation before or during your appointment.
Yes, email is a great way to connect with your adviser, especially for quick questions. However, some topics are better suited for a full appointment.
Email is best for:
- Referrals to other offices
- Simple or brief questions
- Submitting or following up on forms
- Requesting a summary of remaining degree requirements (check MyGrad/MyPlan first)
- Asking about timelines for pinning, graduation, etc.
Schedule an appointment for:
- Complex or detailed questions
- Concerns about classes, grades, or personal situations
- Use your UW email address: Advisers can only share academic information via your official UW email.
- Include a clear subject line: This helps advisers understand your request quickly.
- Be specific: A clear question reduces back-and-forth and helps advisers respond more efficiently.
- When in doubt: If you’re unsure how to phrase your question, consider scheduling an appointment instead.
- Advising staff are trained to meet students where they are.
- Arrive on time, bring your notes/materials, and silence your phone.
- Be open—share your interests, concerns, and goals. Advisers are here to support the whole you.
- Take ownership of your academic decisions and progress.
Academic advisers can assist with:
- Course planning and registration
- Graduation requirements
- Academic difficulty or notification/alert support
- Career and graduate school planning
- Personal concerns impacting academic success, i.e., referral to resources.
During peak periods, advisers may need 2–3 business days to respond to emails. The office is open Monday–Friday. Emails sent over weekends or University holidays will be answered on the next business day.
