Magnuson Scholars Program

The UW School of Nursing (SoN) is currently accepting applications from SoN PhD students interested in being considered for the prestigious Magnuson Scholars Program, sponsored by the Warren G. Magnuson Institute for Biomedical Research and Health Professions Training.

Applications for consideration by the SoN are due by 12 p.m. Pacific Time on Friday, February 20th. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.

Guidelines & restrictions

Scholarships will be approximately $32,000 each. One-half of the scholarship will be disbursed in Summer 2026, and one-half will be disbursed in Winter 2027. Students must be enrolled in both quarters the scholarship is disbursed to be eligible for the scholarship.

Six graduate students will be selected for scholarships: one from each of UW’s six health sciences schools. The SoN may nominate only one student. The nominee will be selected by the SoN based upon the overall strength of the applications when assessed according to the Magnuson Scholars Program’s stated selection criteria:

  • Scholars will be chosen based on their academic achievements and potential, as well as their anticipated contributions to health sciences research. Special consideration will be given to those students who focus on diabetes-related research.

Please note: the strongest applicants will envision and be actively preparing for careers in health sciences research. Applicants who intend careers as practitioners or clinicians – even with a heavy reliance on evidence-based medicine – generally are not as competitive as applicants who intend research careers.

Applications

Applicants should submit the following materials to sonscholarships@uw.edu:

  1. One-page statement of career objectives (saved as a PDF)
  2. Current Program Transcript (PDF of unofficial UW transcript is permitted now, but an official transcript will be required from the final SoN nominee)
  3. One-page letter of recommendation from the supervising faculty member (PDF submitted directly by the faculty member to sonscholarships@uw.edu; the applicant should NOT email the letter of recommendation.)
