Teaching Online 101: Essentials of Online and Hybrid Teaching

Teaching Online 101: Essentials of Effective Online and Hybrid Teaching is an 8-week, fully online, asynchronous course designed to strengthen digital course design and online teaching practices.

  • Spring 2026 session: April 13 – June 7, 2026

This course is open to UW faculty, staff, and graduate students across all three campuses. It focuses especially on designing and teaching effective asynchronous online and hybrid courses.

Participants will engage with tutorials on building course elements in Canvas and explore strategies that help learners access content more easily and interact meaningfully in online learning environments. The course also includes insights, examples, and practical tips from experienced faculty.

  • Helping learners get started
  • Designing for learner success
  • Creating course content
  • Aligning learning objectives
  • Assessment and grading strategies
  • Building instructor presence
  • Fostering connection and interaction
  • Anti-racist and inclusive pedagogy
  • Enhancing accessibility
  • Promoting academic integrity

This course includes weekly deadlines, but there are no required synchronous meetings. Participants typically report spending about 4 hours per week, though time commitments may vary.
