Shared Sacred Seasons: A Message on Joy, Belonging, and Collective Wellbeing from the UW School of Nursing DEIB Office

Across the globe this season, multiple faith and spiritual traditions converge in moments of reflection, renewal, and shared humanity. This month, as we move from Tu B’Shevat into the sacred observances of Lent and Ramadan, alongside Maha Shivaratri, Nirvana Day, Lunar New Year, and Indigenous midwinter ceremonies that honor resilience and new beginnings.

From the UW School of Nursing Office of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging, we recognize this powerful interfaith moment as an invitation to cultivate connection and care within our community. Though each tradition holds its own meaning, many invite us into similar practices: pausing with intention, nurturing compassion, and recommitting ourselves to well-being for ourselves and for one another.

During this season, we invite our community to:

  • Practice small acts of belonging — check in with a colleague, student, or staff member who may be observing or navigating this time differently.
  • Center wellbeing — honor rest, flexibility, and understanding for those fasting, reflecting, or balancing spiritual commitments with academic and clinical responsibilities.
  • Lead with curiosity and respect — learn about traditions beyond our own and create spaces where everyone feels seen, supported, and valued.
  • Find moments of joy — through shared meals, quiet reflection, or simply acknowledging the beauty of our diverse community.

There is great joy in recognizing that unity does not require sameness. Instead, it emerges when we create space for reflection, learning, and shared hope. May this season inspire renewed commitment to belonging, healing, and collective wellbeing — values that guide how we teach, learn, practice, and lead together at UW SoN.
