Firearm Safety Training for Patients and Paid Opportunity

Learn to talk about firearm safety with patients and get paid to practice. Firearm injuries are one of the leading causes of death in the United States, and nurses are often the first behavioral health contact for patients at risk.

Pathways 2 Safety is a free, 3-hour training offered this spring by the UW Center for Firearm Injury Prevention. The training focuses on practical, trauma‑informed approaches for having firearm safety conversations with clients in behavioral health settings.

After completing the training, participants may practice skills using either an AI‑simulated client or a live standardized patient. Both options include structured feedback to support learning and skill development.

Participants who choose to take part in the evaluation component may receive compensation:

  • Up to $30 for completing surveys, including a $10 completion bonus
  • Up to $150 for participating in practice sessions

This is a low‑stakes, voluntary opportunity to build a clinical skill that will carry into professional practice. Participants may also choose to contribute to research exploring how AI tools can support clinical education at UW.
