My name is Meg Elliott, and I am one of the directors of summer camp programs for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Our program is currently in need of volunteers, and I wanted to reach out with information for students who may be interested in service hours and supporting our summer camp program.
MDA Summer Camp provides an incredibly unique experience for both the campers and the volunteers who serve as counselors. The week-long residential programs offer kids ages 8-17 living with neuromuscular disease a completely inclusive environment to freely express who they are and fully participate in summer camp activities designed to be adaptive for all abilities. Counselors play a vital role in the execution of MDA Summer Camp, engaging in the traditional summer camp experience alongside the campers, through adaptive activities, games, dances, mealtimes and more, all while also supporting their physical, emotional, social, and personal care needs. Counselors remain onsite for the duration of the session; housing and meals are provided.
In addition to bringing joy to campers, this fantastic opportunity allows volunteers to gain high-quality, field-based experience in physical therapy, occupational therapy, medical professions, education, recreation, and family social sciences, as well as earning them extensive volunteer hours. MDA Summer Camp locations are available across the nation. Check out this short VIDEO or MDA.org to learn about Summer Camp’s impact on MDA families and Volunteers.
I’ve attached our flyer that can easily be shared with your students as well as other staff and departments. While interested Volunteers are welcome to apply to any MDA Summer Camp session across the nation, the session closest to your students is:
