Keio University nursing exchange applications open

Applications are open for two undergraduate nursing students to participate in a short-term exchange at Keio University Faculty of Nursing and Medicine in Tokyo, Japan, from January 31 through February 5, 2027.

Exchange details

The exchange will provide opportunities for nursing students to learn about and discuss the challenges of an aging society as a global health issue, as well as the role of nurses in addressing these challenges.

Participants will meet nursing students from Japan, Korea, China, Singapore and the United Kingdom. Activities will include:

  • Lectures
  • Group work
  • Discussions with peers
  • Visits to the Keio University Shinanomachi and Shonan Fujisawa campuses
  • Visits to community nursing clinics
  • A visit to Keio University Hospital

The UW Center for Global Health Nursing and the de Tornyay Center for Healthy Aging will support this exchange opportunity.

Participant commitments

Selected students must present a poster at Go Global in March 2027 and at a de Tornyay Center for Healthy Aging event, with the date to be announced. Posters must acknowledge both the Center for Global Health Nursing and the de Tornyay Center for Healthy Aging. The centers will provide additional information and cover the cost of the poster.

Selected students must also be willing to participate in an interview about their experience with the de Tornyay Center for Healthy Aging’s public information specialist after returning from the exchange.

  • Lodging
  • Airfare
  • Travel insurance

Selection criteria

  • Interest in or commitment to gerontology and aging.
  • Quality of the application, including complete and proofread responses to all questions.
  • Good academic standing.
  • Ability to obtain the travel documents required for international travel by January 31, 2027, including a valid passport and short-term visa, if applicable.

Visit the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan website to determine whether you need a short-term visitor visa. U.S. passport holders do not need a visa to attend this exchange.

How to apply

Complete and submit the online application by October 15, 2026, at 5 p.m. Pacific time. Selected students will be notified by October 30, 2026.

Applicants will need:

  • Curriculum vitae
  • Unofficial UW transcript
  • Personal statement of 300 words

In your personal statement, describe your experience and interest in working with older adults and explain how this experience aligns with your future plans as a nurse. Include any previous experience studying abroad. If you have not studied abroad, note that in your statement.
