Applications are now open: For more than 50 years, the American Nurses Association’s (ANA) Minority Fellowship Program (MFP) has prepared nurses to lead in clinical practice, research, education, and health policy. This spring, that legacy continues. Funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), MFP supports master’s- and doctoral-level nurses committed to advancing mental health and substance misuse care for communities that need it most.

- Master’s Fellowship: For registered nurses enrolled full-time in an accredited master’s program focused on mental health or substance misuse care. Fellows commit to a two-year fellowship period.
- Doctoral Fellowship (DNP or PhD): For behavioral health nurses enrolled full-time in an accredited doctoral program in psychiatric mental health or substance misuse care. Fellowship commitments align with doctoral program requirements.
What the fellowship offers: - Financial support for advanced nursing education
- Structured mentorship with experienced behavioral health nurse leaders
- Leadership development across practice, research, and policy
- Professional development sessions, fireside chats, and the mandatory Summer Intensive Training Institute (ITI)
How to apply: The application typically takes 60–90 minutes to complete. Applicants are encouraged to gather the following materials in advance:
- Proof of U.S. citizenship or permanent residency
- Current résumé or curriculum vitae
- Academic transcripts
- Proof of full-time enrollment
- Three professional letters of recommendation
- A personal statement outlining career goals, leadership vision, and commitment to advancing behavioral health care
