Statistical Consulting from UW Statistics and Biostatistics

The UW Statistical Consulting Service is now available for the upcoming quarter. Appointments will be held online via Zoom.

Faculty and graduate students in the Consulting Program in the Departments of Biostatistics and Statistics offer free statistical advising to the UW community through scheduled 50-minute appointments during the academic year while classes are in session.

Consultants can help with:

  • designing studies and experiments, including support for grant proposal preparation
  • data visualization and presentation
  • choosing and applying statistical methods
  • developing specialized statistical methods in some cases

Before an appointment, clients should be prepared to summarize the scientific background and goals of their research before discussing specific statistical questions, methods, or analyses.

Consultants primarily use the R statistical analysis system, but they work with clients using whichever statistical package is most convenient.

Please note: statistical consulting is intended for study design and data analysis guidance, not software tutorials or technical support.

About the consulting program

The Consulting Program is a UW course for graduate students in the Departments of Biostatistics and Statistics. Through the course, students learn how to apply their statistical skills to a range of real-world problems.

Most appointments include three to four consultants: two to three student trainees and one faculty adviser. Some questions require additional research and discussion among the consulting team to determine the most appropriate statistical guidance. In those cases, follow-up appointments are typically scheduled.

While resources are limited, some collaboration on data analysis may be available on a case-by-case basis depending on consultant availability, client needs, project scope, and the type of analysis requested.
